What is the story about?
U.S. President Donald Trump concluded his visit to Beijing on Friday with a private meeting at the official residence of Chinese leader Xi Jinping before
returning to Washington. During a series of meetings on Thursday, the two leaders addressed contentious topics including the Iran war, trade relations, technology, and Taiwan.
In those discussions, Trump noted that Xi expressed China's willingness to assist in negotiating an end to the Iran conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump highlighted China's status as the largest purchaser of Iranian oil, hoping Xi would leverage that influence to secure a deal favorable to the U.S. Additionally, Trump stated that Xi assured him China would not supply Iran with military equipment.Throughout the trip, Trump maintained an optimistic perspective on U.S.-China relations, despite the underlying challenges regarding Taiwan, trade, and the Iran war. Xi cautioned that disputes over Taiwan, which China claims as its own, could lead to conflicts between the two nations. In December, Trump had authorized an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, but the delivery remains pending. Secretary of State Marco Rubio later emphasized that any military action by China against Taiwan would be a significant misstep.
Trade discussions also featured prominently, with Trump advocating for increased Chinese purchases of U.S. agricultural products and passenger aircraft, while establishing a board to resolve differences and prevent a recurrence of last year's trade war, which escalated due to Trump's tariff increases.
Taiwan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lin Chia-lung, expressed gratitude on Friday for U.S. support, particularly acknowledging Rubio's statements from the previous day regarding the unchanged U.S. policy towards Taiwan. Lin affirmed Taiwan's commitment to strengthening its self-defense capabilities in light of ongoing tensions.
During a formal lunch between Trump and Xi, the menu included dishes such as minced codfish in seafood soup, crispy stir-fried lobster balls, and pan-seared beef fillet stuffed with morel mushrooms. In contrast, staff outside enjoyed McDonald's, a known favorite of Trump, who reportedly consumes the fast food daily.
Prior to their lunch, Xi guided Trump through Zhongnanhai, the former imperial gardens and current seat of Chinese governance, where they admired centuries-old trees. Xi remarked on the age of the trees, pointing out that some were as old as 1,000 years, and expressed his appreciation for Trump's previous hospitality during his visit to Mar-A-Lago in 2017.
While Trump typically engages with the media, he refrained from answering questions during his visit, maintaining silence in front of reporters during their tour of the Temple of Heaven and at Zhongnanhai. This relative quiet extended to his social media activity, which was notably less frequent during the three-day trip.
Trump described the visit as 'incredible,' asserting that significant progress had been made, including 'fantastic trade deals' beneficial for both nations. He reiterated that both the U.S. and Israel share a common goal in ending the Iran conflict, emphasizing the necessity of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.
Trump noted that Xi promised to send rose seeds to him, reflecting on a shared moment while walking through the gardens. Trump expressed admiration for the beauty of the roses and reiterated his desire to enhance the White House Rose Garden.
The White House has not yet disclosed specific agreements reached during the summit, although Trump indicated that agricultural purchases would occur as a result of the discussions. U.S. soybean farmers, particularly impacted by the previous trade war, have been urging Trump to secure additional purchases from China.
As Trump prepares to depart for Washington, his visit has reportedly deepened trust and cooperation between the two nations, with both leaders agreeing to enhance communication on international issues. A spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry stated that the meetings have fostered mutual understanding and stability, while also addressing the concerns of both nations.
