Cyclone Montha: Andhra Pradesh and Odisha began preparations on Sunday in anticipation of Cyclone Montha, which has formed in the Bay of Bengal. According
to the Meteorological Department, the storm could hit the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has provided an update on Cyclonic Storm “Montha” (pronounced Mon-Tha). As of 2:30 AM IST on October 27, 2025, the storm over the Southwest and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal was moving west-northwestwards at a speed of 16 kmph. The cyclone is currently centred near latitude 11.7°N and longitude 85.5°E, approximately:
- 600 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu)
- 680 km south-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh)
- 710 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh)
- 790 km west of Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands)
- 850 km south of Gopalpur (Odisha)
Additionally, according to a report by TOI, Cyclone Montha is intensifying in the Bay of Bengal, prompting coastal states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to prepare for landfall by late Tuesday.
Heavy Rain Warning in These States
Due to Cyclone Montha, heavy rainfall is expected in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu between October 27 and 30.
In Odisha, the government has declared eight districts as "red zones," meaning areas at the highest risk. These districts are Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Raigarh, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, and Kalahandi. Officials say these areas will be most affected by heavy rain and strong winds on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Weather Patterns to Change in North India
The weather is about to change in North India. Delhi and NCR will experience changes in the weather for the next three days.
According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), light drizzle is possible on the evening or night of October 27th and 28th. A rain alert has also been issued for Uttar Pradesh for the next four days, starting October 27th, meaning rain is also possible there. Bihar will also experience the effects of the cyclone formed in the Bay of Bengal.
The Meteorological Department says that light rain is likely in Bihar between October 29th and 31st, while some districts may experience strong winds and thunderstorms.
Schools will remain closed
According to a TOI report, authorities in Kakinada have begun evacuating people from Hope Island.
Schools will remain closed from October 27th to 31st due to a heavy rain warning. Schools and colleges in West Godavari district will also be closed on October 27th and 28th, and all recreational activities at beaches and resorts have been suspended.
Schools have also been ordered closed in Eluru. Additionally, instructions have been given to install generators to keep mobile towers running, and people living in old, weak buildings and low-lying areas have been evacuated to safer locations.
