S. Krishnan, Secretary Meity, said India has witnessed a massive expansion in its digital infrastructure over the past decade. He noted that the country
had around 25 crore internet connections in 2014, which have now increased to 107 crore. India also has nearly 100 crore broadband subscribers. Highlighting the growth of digital payments, Krishnan said Unified Payments Interface (UPI) now processes around 75 crore transactions every day. He added that nearly 98% of all transactions by value in the country are now digital. He also said DigiLocker has crossed 70 crore users. Krishnan said the International Monetary Fund has recognised UPI as the world's largest real-time payments system. He added that nine countries have already implemented UPI, with more nations expected to adopt the platform in the future. On welfare delivery, Krishnan said India currently operates more than 300 Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes. Through these schemes, ₹51.5 lakh crore has been transferred directly to beneficiaries.
