Despite having windows, he has opted to keep the blinds closed to avoid media attention.He stated, “It's a very nice room. I already ordered a mattress pad, new pillows. I think, for now, my plan is to take it one day at a time and that's the best I can do.” Recently, he enjoyed an iced Horchata with oak milk and vanilla cold foam, which he shared on social media, exclaiming, “This is everything I needed, right now. Wow!”
Understanding Hantavirus Transmission
The hantavirus is typically spread through rodent droppings and is not easily transmitted between humans. However, the Andes virus linked to the cruise ship incident may have rare instances of human-to-human transmission. Symptoms of the virus can manifest between one and eight weeks post-exposure.Rosmarin noted that he has not experienced any illness, stating, “I never got sick.” The outbreak affected 11 passengers on the MV Hondius, with at least nine confirmed cases and three fatalities, including a Dutch couple believed to be the initial victims of the virus.
The Quarantine Process
As a precaution, passengers were instructed to remain in their cabins once illness began to spread on the ship. Rosmarin explained that he ventured outside his cabin for only 15 minutes each day to refill his water and get fresh air, while practicing social distancing and wearing a mask.The quarantine and biocontainment units in Omaha are specifically designed to monitor individuals exposed to serious infectious diseases. Visitors are not allowed, and medical staff are required to wear full protective gear when entering patient rooms.
Experiences from the Voyage
Rosmarin began his global travels in 2022 after leaving his job as a media buyer. He has a partnership with the ship's operator, which covered the expenses for his expedition, including visits to remote islands in the South Atlantic. He recounted seeing a vast colony of King penguins and various other wildlife during the trip.He characterized the MV Hondius as an expedition vessel, emphasizing its cleanliness compared to traditional cruise ships. Biosecurity measures were strictly enforced to protect fragile ecosystems during landings on the islands.
Rosmarin's planned five-week trip extended to six weeks due to the outbreak, with disembarkation occurring only after the situation was assessed. He remarked, “We didn't really know it was the hantavirus until the night we were supposed to disembark.”
