Fuel Prices Today, April 21: Global oil prices slipped slightly on Tuesday but still stayed close to recent highs, as ongoing geopolitical tensions in West
Asia kept supply worries alive. Market sentiment remained cautious after US President Donald Trump indicated a tougher position on Iran ahead of the ceasefire deadline. He said it was “highly unlikely” that the United States would extend the ceasefire with Iran, which is due to expire on Wednesday evening (Washington time). Trump also stated that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until a peace agreement is reached with Iran. This strait is a crucial route for oil exports from the Middle East, and any disruption there could significantly reduce global supply and drive prices higher. Meanwhile, retail petrol prices at government-run fuel stations in India stayed unchanged for the day. However, earlier swings in global crude oil prices continue to affect sectors like aviation fuel and commercial gas pricing.

State-run oil marketing companies have mostly kept retail fuel prices steady, though some private fuel retailers and premium fuel variants have seen price hikes. Companies like Nayara Energy and Shell India have raised prices in certain segments, citing margin pressures caused by consistently high crude oil rates.
In the aviation sector, Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) initially saw a sharp price rise but was later partially reduced for domestic airlines, reflecting continued volatility in global oil markets.
To ease pressure on consumers and support public sector oil firms, the Government of India cut excise duties on petroleum products on March 26, 2026. The excise duty on petrol was reduced to Rs 3 per litre, while the duty on diesel was completely removed. This measure is aimed at helping major state-owned oil marketing companies such as HPCL, BPCL, and IOC manage cost pressures amid persistently high crude oil prices.
