What is the story about?
The Delhi government will soon introduce a revamped Electric Vehicle (EV) policy from the next financial year, with a strong focus on financial incentives,
scrappage of old vehicles, and the development of neighbourhood-level charging infrastructure, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Saturday, December 20. She added that the policy aims to make electric mobility more accessible and affordable for residents, particularly middle-class families, while accelerating the transition away from polluting vehicles. The initiative is also expected to boost EV adoption across the city, reduce emissions, and significantly improve Delhi’s air quality.
Delhi to roll out new EV policy next fiscal year: 10 key points
1. The Delhi government has prepared a comprehensive framework for a new electric vehicle (EV) policy, which is expected to be rolled out from the next financial year, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Saturday.
2. She said the policy is designed to promote the widespread adoption of electric mobility by offering targeted incentives, supporting infrastructure development, and encouraging the phasing out of older, polluting vehicles.
3. The revamped Electric Vehicle (EV) policy from the next financial year, with a strong focus on financial incentives, scrappage of old vehicles, and the development of neighbourhood-level charging infrastructure.
4. The initiative aims to strengthen Delhi’s transition to clean transportation while addressing air pollution and making EVs more accessible to residents.
5. Delhi CM asserted that the policy will play a significant role in curbing pollution and modernising the transport infrastructure in the national capital.
6. She added that by encouraging cleaner modes of transport and supporting advanced mobility solutions, the initiative would help improve air quality, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and create a more sustainable and future-ready transport system for Delhi.
7. To bring down pollution levels and ensure a smooth transition to electric vehicles, the government is focusing on providing financial incentives, expanding charging infrastructure, and phasing out highly polluting vehicles from the roads, she said.
8. She added that these measures are aimed at encouraging wider EV adoption, easing concerns around cost and accessibility, and creating a cleaner, more sustainable urban transport ecosystem in the capital.
9. Rekha Gupta further said the policy would play a crucial role in improving air quality. "Wider adoption of EVs will directly reduce PM2.5 and PM10 levels," she said, adding that the government intends to align subsidies and infrastructure development to turn Delhi into the country's - and possibly the world's - EV capital.
10. A high-level committee chaired by Power Minister Ashish Sood has been reviewing the new EV policy for the past four months. The panel is currently finalising subsidy structures while factoring in expert recommendations, officials said, according to a report by The Economic Times.
