Delhi-NCR weather today: Rain lashed parts of the national capital on Friday, January 9, intensifying the winter chill and bringing down the temperatures
across the city. The rain, accompanied by dense fog in several areas, reduced visibility and added to the already cold conditions. Due to this, Delhi is under a yellow alert for dense fog, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting below-normal temperatures for January 9, while the city’s air quality slipped back into the ‘very poor’ category on Friday. According to an ANI post on X, Visuals from India Gate in New Delhi showed low visibility amid foggy conditions, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the area recorded at 329, falling in the “Very Poor” category, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Early morning scenes from the Delhi–Meerut Expressway showed the winter chill setting in as temperatures dropped across the national capital, with foggy conditions affecting visibility, according to a post by PTI on X. The air quality in the national capital showed a slight improvement to settle in the poor category on Thursday morning, January 8, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board. The Air Quality Index (AQI) on Thursday morning was recorded at 276 compared to 336 on Wednesday morning. Delhi's 24-hour average air quality on Wednesday was 289. However, according to CPCB data, several areas in the city witnessed a decline in air quality. Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 324, slipping into the 'very poor' category. Other areas, including Chandini Chowk (320), Jahangirpuri (327), Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (306), and Nehru Nagar (343), also recorded a drop in air quality, according to a report by ANI. In contrast, other locations recorded a slightly improved air quality than other regions in the city. For instance, Asok Nagar recorded an AQI of 296, which falls into the 'poor' category, according to the CPCB. Other places like IGI Airport (207), ITO (270), and Burari (231) also recorded similar results. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) classification, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor' and 401 and 500 'severe'.
