It is also stated that conditions are favorable for the monsoon to advance into some more parts of the southeastern Arabian Sea, and the southwestern and southeastern Bay of Bengal, during the next three to four days.
Along with the Andaman Islands and the remaining parts of the Andaman Sea, the monsoon may also set in over the east-central parts of the Bay of Bengal during this period.
IMD said, "All the criteria are satisfied for the advance of southwest monsoon over the region."
Heavy rain likely in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka
The department stated on Friday that the Southwest Monsoon is expected to arrive in Kerala ahead of schedule on May 26. The monsoon typically sets in over Kerala on June 1, marking the beginning of the Southwest Monsoon season (June to September).
The IMD, earlier said that India could experience below-normal rainfall during this year's monsoon season. This could be due to the emergence of El Niño conditions during this season, which leads to reduced rainfall in the country.
