What is the story about?
The Congress party has released two lists naming candidates contesting in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, scheduled for January 15.
On Monday, December 29, Congress unveiled its first list of 70 candidates for the upcoming elections to the BMC. On Tuesday, December 30, the party further released a list of 56 candidates, taking the total names of candidates announced to 126.
The announcements were made as the deadline for filing nominations stand on December 30, underscoring the party’s push to firm up its electoral strategy in India’s largest civic body, as per news agency PTI.
The BMC election process has entered a crucial phase, with December 30 marked as the last date for submitting nomination papers, and final names of the candidates will be released on January 3.
The release of the Congress lists is expected to help candidates accelerate campaign activities across key wards in Mumbai.
The BMC, which has 227 seats, is widely regarded as the country’s richest municipal corporation, with an annual budget exceeding ₹74,000 crore, as per PTI. Control of the civic body is therefore seen as politically and administratively significant.
Seat-sharing with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi
The Congress lists follows the finalisation of a seat-sharing arrangement with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), led by former MP Prakash Ambedkar.
The alliance was sealed on Sunday, December 28, before the candidate list was released.
Under the pact, the VBA will contest 62 seats in the BMC elections, while the Congress will field candidates in the remaining constituencies allocated to it as part of the understanding.
Allies announce separate candidate lists
In addition to the Congress and VBA, other alliance partners have also begun declaring their nominees. Former Maharashtra minister Mahadev Jankar’s Rashtriya Samaj Paksh (RSP), which is contesting the civic polls in alliance with the Congress, announced its first list of six candidates, as per PTI.
Meanwhile, the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) declared candidates for seven seats in Mumbai.
The party is a constituent of the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) but has not entered into any separate alliance with other political parties specifically for the Mumbai civic polls.
