Rain swept parts of Delhi on Tuesday morning, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for more showers at several places over the next few hours.
The capital is expected to remain generally cloudy, with light rain at most places and moderate showers in some areas. Another spell of rain is likely towards the evening or night.
Heavy rainfall also triggered landslides in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district, burying vehicles and forcing several families to evacuate their homes.
In neighbouring Uttarakhand, overnight rain caused trees to fall and blocked at least 19 roads, including the route to Mussoorie.
“As rain is happening in Dehradun since last night, we got information about tree fall, 19 roads are closed, Mussorie road is closed due to debris, we are trying to open it, we are trying to restore normalcy...” Dehradun District Magistrate Ashish Chauhan told PTI.
The IMD has forecast very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, east and west Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka on Tuesday.
In Assam, meanwhile, the flood situation improved as water levels receded across several districts and no fresh deaths were reported. The number of affected people declined to 4.45 lakh, while the toll remained at 68.
Sivasagar, Golaghat, Charaideo, Jorhat, Nagaon and Kamrup Metropolitan districts remained affected. A central team also visited Sivasagar, among the worst-hit districts, to review the situation.
Squally winds reaching 50–60 kmph and gusting to 70 kmph are likely over the northwest Bay of Bengal and along the Odisha, West Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh coasts until Tuesday morning. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the northwest Bay of Bengal or along these coasts until the morning of July 29.
