Landslide Kills 5 Near Vaishno Devi

At least five people were killed and 14 others were injured as a landslide hit Jammu and Kashmir's Adhkwari region near Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine on Tuesday, August 26.

Rescue operations are underway as

many people are feared to be trapped inside the debris.

"In an unfortunate incident of landslide at Adhkwari, 5 people have lost their lives and 14 others have been injured. Rescue operations underway," Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board said on X (formerly Twitter).

Earlier in the day, a landslide occurred near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkwari, where some people were feared injured.

Cloudburst in Doda causes floods

A cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district has triggered floods in the region on

Tuesday (August 26) resulting in the death of three people. The continuous heavy rainfall across the district has triggered landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones, led the closure of several link roads as well as stretches of the national highway. The road connectivity near Tanta has been lost.

Internet and phone services were disrupted in the state due to heavy rains. The Chenab river

was flowing above the danger mark and Jammu-Srinagar highway has been shut.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the situation is quite serious in many parts of Jammu. "I'll be taking the next available flight from Srinagar to Jammu to personally monitor the developing situation. In the mean time instructions have been issued to place additional funds at the disposal of the DCs to cover emergency restoration work and other exigences," he said.

Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh said it has been raining continuously for three days. Reports of cloud bursts have come from two places. "NH 244 has been washed away in a cloud burst. Three lives have been lost so far, 15 residential houses have been damaged, and cow sheds have also been damaged. The highest flood level of the Chenab River is 900 feet, and currently it has already reached 899.3 meters, so there is a difference of one and a quarter meters. The way it is raining, we are expecting that the HFL will be breached. We have limited the movement of people near the Chenab River and on the roads adjacent to the Chenab River. People have been shifted and they have been shifted to safe locations," he said.

Jammu DIG Shiv Kumar Sharma said a flood alert has been sounded after Tawi river swells. The administration has appealed to the public to avoid going near rivers and nallahs. "We are taking all measures to ensure the safety of the people," he said.

Almost all the rivers and streams are flowing above or close to the

danger mark, submerging a number of low-lying areas and roads in the city and elsewhere, they said. All gates of the Ranjit Sagar Dam on the Ravi River have been opened as the water level increased due to heavy rainfall.

Reports said the traffic on the 250-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway was suspended as a precautionary measure following shooting of stones from the hillocks at Chanderkote, Kela Morh and Battery Cheshma in Ramban district.

The vehicular movement on the highway, the only all-weather road

linking Kashmir with rest of the country, was suspended at Udhampur in Jammu and Qazigund in Kashmir.

Authorities have already issued advisories, asking people to stay away from water bodies and landslide-prone areas amid the weather forecast predicting moderate to heavy rainfall at many places in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Reasi, Udhampur, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar districts with possibility of cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides in high altitude areas till August 27.
