What is the story about?
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has announced that hotels and guest houses registered with the Union Territory’s Tourism Department will be granted "industry" status from June 1, 2026.
In a post on X, Saxena said the move would enable these units to avail incentives, concessions and infrastructure support at par with other industries in Ladakh.
"Have ordered to declare the Hotels & Guest Houses, registered with Tourism Dept in Ladakh, as 'Industry', that would benefit these units with incentives, concessions and infrastructure support, at par with other Industries in the UT," Saxena said.
According to the Lieutenant Governor, the decision is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push to strengthen the domestic tourism sector through incentives and policy guidelines.
Saxena said the benefits of the "industry" status would include electricity and water tariffs at industrial rates instead of commercial rates, eligibility for concessional bank loans under state and central government industrial policies, and exemption from property tax.
He added that the move would help reduce operating costs for hotels and guest houses and enhance investor confidence in Ladakh.
"I am confident, fulfilling this long pending demand and the consequent incentives, would accelerate the growth of hotel industry in Ladakh, catering to the ever-growing needs of the tourists," Saxena said.
The Lieutenant Governor also said the decision would help create an enabling environment for the expansion and strengthening of the hospitality industry in the Union Territory.
