What is the story about?
Heatwave conditions have abated across India as the southwest monsoon is expected to advance further into parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, and adjoining regions over the next few days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), conditions remain favourable for the monsoon's further advance into additional parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, marking a gradual strengthening of the seasonal rainfall system after weeks of scorching temperatures across large parts of the country.
In Delhi, residents are set to get a respite from the intense heat seen earlier in May. Expect partly cloudy skies today with maximum temperatures between 37°C and 39°C, below normal for this time of year. No heatwave conditions are forecast, although gusty winds are expected during the day.
The IMD, however, has warned that heatwave conditions could re-emerge over Bihar between June 4 and June 6.
Moderate to severe thunderstorm activity accompanied by squally winds of up to 90 kmph and isolated hailstorms is likely over northwest, central, and adjoining east India.
Rajasthan is likely to witness the strongest winds, with gusts reaching up to 90 kmph, while thunderstorms and squally winds are also forecast across parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Odisha and Jharkhand. Isolated hailstorms are expected over parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh.
Heavy rainfall is likely to continue over parts of Northeast India and the southern peninsula through the week. The IMD has forecast isolated heavy rain over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and other northeastern states, while Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and Karnataka are also expected to receive significant rainfall. Very heavy rain is likely over Kerala and Mahe between June 3 and June 6.
