What is the story about?
Mumbai witnessed fresh spells of rain on Sunday, May 24, bringing relief from the scorching heat and humid conditions across the city and nearby regions. Several parts of Thane, Mira Bhayandar and Mahim received showers accompanied by cloudy skies and gusty winds as pre-monsoon activity continued to intensify in Maharashtra.
According to visuals shared by PTI on Sunday, rain lashed several parts of Thane district, with residents enjoying cooler weather after days of rising temperatures. Dark clouds and sudden showers were also reported from parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Weather updates shared on X by Rushikesh Agre, the 21-year-old law student behind the popular ‘Mumbai Rains’ social media handle known for local weather updates, said Mira Bhayandar witnessed rainfall around 9 am on Sunday. He also posted that parts of Mahim were receiving rain around 9:28 am.
The city had also received spells of pre-monsoon rain on Friday and Saturday, especially in eastern suburbs such as Mulund and Bhandup. The showers marked one of the season’s early signs of the approaching southwest monsoon.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai, on Sunday issued a yellow nowcast warning for Maharashtra’s coastal districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds over the next few hours. The weather department said winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph were likely at isolated places in the two districts and advised residents to remain cautious while stepping outdoors.
For Mumbai, the IMD has predicted partly cloudy skies with the possibility of intermittent rain and thundershowers. The city’s maximum temperature is expected to remain around 34 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to hover near 29 degrees Celsius.
Residents across Mumbai shared visuals of overcast skies, rain and windy weather on social media as temperatures dipped slightly after a long stretch of hot and sticky conditions. While the rainfall brought temporary relief, humidity levels continued to remain high in many parts of the city and neighbouring suburbs.
In 2025, the city recorded its earliest monsoon arrival in 75 years after heavy rainfall hit the region on May 26, just two days after the southwest monsoon reached Kerala on May 24.
The normal date for monsoon onset in Mumbai is June 11, according to the India Meteorological Department.
