What is the story about?
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the doubling of the 177-km Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat railway line in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal at an estimated cost of ₹3,169 crore.
The project will expand the railway network by 177 km and is expected to ease operations, reduce congestion, and improve the efficiency and reliability of train services.
It has been planned under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency through integrated planning.
Covering five districts across the three states, the line will provide better rail access to about 441 villages and 28.72 lakh people, including the aspirational districts of
Banka, Godda and Dumka
It will also connect important religious destinations such as Deoghar (Baba Baidyanath Dham) in Jharkhand and Tarapith (Shakti Peeth) in West Bengal, which attract large numbers of pilgrims and tourists.
The section is an important route for transporting coal, cement, fertilisers, bricks and stones. With the doubling, freight capacity is expected to rise by 15 million tonnes per year.
The project will also reduce oil imports by about 5 crore litres and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 24 crore
kg, equivalent to planting one crore trees.
According to the government, the project will improve the movement of passengers and goods while creating employment and self-employment opportunities in the region. The approval comes ahead of assembly elections in Bihar later this year.
