What is the story about?
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Tuesday night said "malicious actors" attempted to disrupt its re-evaluation portal through cyberattacks while students were accessing the platform for verification and re-evaluation of Class 12 answer books.
In a post on X, the board said the latest incident involved a denial-of-service (DoS) attack attempt that generated 1.5 million hits on the portal within two minutes, along with more than one lakh attempts at unauthorised file access.
Despite the activity, CBSE said the portal was handling nearly 14,000 concurrent users and had recorded over 28,000 successful submissions as of 10 pm on Tuesday.
The board added that improvements, including extended session time limits, had been introduced based on student feedback. "Our teams remain on constant watch to ensure a secure, reliable and student-friendly platform," it said.
Expert flags risks
Srinivas L, Joint MD and Joint CEO of 63SATS Cybertech, the cybersecurity arm of 63 Moons Technologies, described the incident as a "coordinated, two-pronged operation".
According to him, the DoS attack appeared to be a diversion, while the file-access attempts suggested efforts to extract information from the system. He said the volume of requests indicated a coordinated attack rather than a routine system issue.
Srinivas also said the incident highlighted the need for stronger cyber resilience in examination systems, especially those handling student data, instead of relying on reactive security measures.
Re-evaluation process
Earlier in the day, CBSE opened the online portal for verification of issues observed in scanned copies of answer books and re-evaluation of answers for Class 12 students dissatisfied with their evaluation.
The facility is available only to students who have already obtained scanned copies of their evaluated answer books. The portal opened on June 2 and will remain available until midnight on June 6. Offline applications and requests submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.
Students must log in through the CBSE website using Aadhaar details and complete the application and fee payment process online.
For verification requests, students can report issues such as missing pages, supplementary sheets, maps or graphs, blurred pages, incorrect answer books or evaluation against a different question paper set.
Fees and rules
The fee is ₹100 per answer book for verification of issues and ₹25 per question for re-evaluation. Payments can be made online through UPI, credit cards, debit cards and net banking.
CBSE said students can submit only one application each for verification and re-evaluation. Once the "freeze and proceed to payment" option is selected, application details cannot be edited. Requests will be considered submitted only after successful online payment.
Students may apply for re-evaluation of one or more questions across subjects by providing details such as the question number and page number. The board said the results of the process will be communicated after completion.
CBSE has also introduced Aadhaar-based verification for security. Students without Aadhaar may use the Aadhaar details of a parent, guardian or relative. The portal was launched after a delay, with CBSE having earlier indicated that applications were expected to begin by May 29.
