Vaishnaw, in an update to Lok Sabha in July, said that it would be operational by December 2027.
The train will be India's fastest yet, covering a distance of 508 km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in two hours and seven minutes at 308 km per hour. Once completed, it will cover the entire distance in 2 hours and 17 minutes.
It will run from the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Maharashtra and end at Sabarmati in Gujarat with 12 stops including Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, and Ahmedabad, and will terminate at Sabarmati.
Foundation stone for the project was laid back in 2017 with a target to complete by December 2023.
India is also collaborating with Japan to improve mobility infrastructure. It was one of the areas of focus during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba in August 2025.
