The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for ‘very dense fog’ in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. An yellow alert for dense fog has been issued for Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Odisha, and the northeastern states.
The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning in Tamil Nadu and a cold wave alert for Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and parts of Karnataka.
In a post on X, the weather agency said, "Dense to very dense fog is very likely during the early morning hours of 17th December at isolated pockets over Uttar Pradesh and east Madhya Pradesh. Dense fog conditions are also expected across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, West Madhya Pradesh, West Rajasthan, and Odisha."

Shallow fog in Delhi
Delhi is expected to experience mainly clear skies, accompanied by significant early morning fog conditions, with shallow fog at many locations and moderate fog in isolated areas over the next few days.
The temperature is expected to reach a maximum of 23 to 25 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 9 to 11 degrees Celsius. According to the data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the national capital recorded an average AQI of 327 at around 9 am, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category.
Dense fog
From December 17 to 21, extensive fog conditions will impact multiple regions, with very dense fog expected over parts of Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh on December 17 and 18.
Dense fog is also forecast for the isolated pockets of Northeast ( from Dec 17 to 21), Punjab ( from Dec 17 to 20), Haryana and Chandigarh ( from Dec 18 to 20), and Himachal Pradesh (Dec 17, 18, 19). Additionally, isolated pockets of Uttarakhand, West Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha will experience dense fog on December 17 and 18.
“Dense fog conditions very likely to prevail during early hours/morning hours in isolated pockets of Uttar Pradesh during 17th - 20th and Madhya Pradesh during 17th -19th with very dense fog at a few places over Uttar Pradesh on 17th and at isolated places over Uttar Pradesh on 18th; over East Madhya Pradesh on 17th & 18th December,” The IMD said.
Cold wave warning
On December 17 and 18, cold wave conditions are very likely to prevail at isolated places over Telangana, North Interior Karnataka, and West Madhya Pradesh.
Thunderstorm and lightning in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry
On December 17, isolated places over the Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph.
Rainfall/ snowfall in J&K and Himachal Pradesh
According to the IMD, light rainfall and snowfall are forecast for a few isolated places across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan and Muzaffarabad between December 18 and 22. This weather pattern will then extend to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on December 20 and 21, followed by Uttarakhand on December 21.
Minimum temperatures
Minimum temperatures across Northwest India will see no significant change for the next three days before gradually rising by 2–3°C over the following four days. Gujarat will see no significant change in the next 24 hours, followed by a 2–3°C rise over the subsequent three days, with stability thereafter. The rest of the country is expected to maintain consistent minimum temperatures throughout the next seven days.
