Delhi's Malviya Nagar Fire Live Updates: At least 21 people were killed and several others injured after a massive fire broke out at the Flourish Stay B&B in Delhi's Malviya Nagar area on Wednesday, officials said.
The blaze erupted in the five-storey building in Hauz Rani. Earlier reports had suggested that the fire started at the nearby Lemon Green Restaurant, but police later clarified that it originated in the hotel building, according to PTI.
Officials said several of the victims were foreign nationals, mainly from Central Asian and African countries. More than 40 people were rescued and taken to hospitals, where 21 were declared dead. The injured include some in critical condition, raising fears that the toll could increase.
Firefighters, police and disaster response teams carried out extensive rescue operations, evacuating people from the smoke-filled building, including from the basement. The structure suffered extensive damage.
Eyewitnesses described people breaking windows and jumping from upper floors to escape the flames. Local residents reportedly assisted rescue efforts before emergency services arrived, using mattresses to cushion falls and administering CPR to victims.
The rescue operation has concluded and the building has been cordoned off for investigation. Authorities are yet to determine the cause of the fire.
