What is the story about?
Digi Yatra, on Saturday, announced that it recorded more than 10 crore passenger usage across 38 airports in India. The app has also crossed 2.4 crore downloads on iOS and Android platforms.
The biometric-based platform allows passengers to move through airports without manual document checks. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, it has reduced the average airport entry processing time from 15 seconds to 5 seconds per passenger.
The system has helped improve passenger flow, reduce congestion at terminals and lower manual processing requirements. The initiative has also reduced the use of physical boarding passes, saving thousands of sheets of paper every day at participating airports.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said, "I congratulate the Digi Yatra Team for the 10-crore usage milestone, it reflects the growing trust passengers are placing in seamless, paperless and contactless travel."
The minister said the milestone comes as domestic air travel continues to grow. Daily domestic passenger traffic, which averaged below 2 lakh passengers in 2014, has crossed 5 lakh on many occasions over the past three years. He said annual passenger traffic across Indian airports is projected to reach 50 crore by 2030 and nearly 100 crore by 2040.
Naidu said the government is adopting digital solutions such as Digi Yatra, Self-Baggage Drop Facility, upgraded Air Traffic Control automation systems, the AirSewa grievance redressal portal and AI-powered digital twins to support this growth.
He said Digi Yatra is currently operational at 38 airports and will be introduced at 27 more airports by next year. He also said the Navi Mumbai, Jewar and Bhogapuram greenfield airports, which are expected to become operational this year, will be fully Digi Yatra-enabled.
"While many nations continue to evaluate the large-scale deployment of biometric passenger processing, India has successfully operationalized and scaled Digi Yatra within a remarkably short timeframe," Naidu said.
The minister said the platform is also being made more inclusive. Digi Yatra currently supports 11 languages, and 11 additional regional languages are planned to be added by the end of the year.
The platform follows a privacy-by-design approach. Passenger data is encrypted and stored on the user's device. It is shared only for a limited period with the departure airport for verification purposes.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation said it remains committed to improving the airport travel experience through digital initiatives aligned with the government's Digital India and Aviation for All programmes.
