What is the story about?
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, approved four railway multitracking projects worth about
₹24,634 crore.
The projects, covering 18 districts across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh, will expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 894 kilometres, as revealed Ministry of Railways.
The approved projects include:
These projects will enhance connectivity to around 3,633 villages with a combined population of about 85.84 lakh, including two Aspirational Districts—Vidisha and Rajnandgaon.
The multitracking initiative aims to improve line capacity, mobility, and operational efficiency while reducing congestion. It is aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision of promoting regional self-reliance and development through better infrastructure and employment opportunities.
Developed under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the projects focus on improving multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency through integrated planning.
The railway sections will also connect key destinations such as Sanchi, Satpura Tiger Reserve, Bhimbetka rock shelters, Hazara Falls, and Nawegaon National Park, boosting tourism potential.
These routes are vital for transporting coal, containers, cement, fly ash, food grains, and steel. The capacity expansion is expected to handle additional freight traffic of about 78 million tonnes per annum.
The projects will contribute to environmental goals by reducing logistics costs, cutting oil imports by about 28 crore litres, and lowering carbon emissions by around 139 crore kilograms—equivalent to planting six crore trees.
