What is the story about?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, June 5, inaugurated the NAMO Hospital and the new terminal building of NAMO Airport in Daman, while also laying foundation stones and inaugurating a series of development projects aimed at boosting infrastructure and connectivity in the Union Territories.
Addressing a gathering in Daman, the Prime Minister said the projects marked a new phase of development not only for Daman and Diu but also for Lakshadweep, where people joined the event virtually.
"Today marks a new beginning for the development of Lakshadweep, with the foundation stone laying and inauguration of projects that will bring transformative change to the lives of its people," Modi said.
Recalling his earlier visits to the region, Modi said Daman had evolved into a "Mini India" owing to its diversity and the presence of people from across the country.
"Daman has become a living example of Mini India. Its diversity and the presence of people from different parts of the country offer a beautiful glimpse of India as a whole," he said, adding that the region had witnessed significant progress in governance and infrastructure over the years.
The Prime Minister said every visit to Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli reinforces his belief that the region has advanced substantially compared to previous years, citing improvements in governance and development outcomes.
₹18,000-cr projects in Gujarat
Separately, in Surat, Modi addressed a public rally and participated in programmes linked to World Environment Day. He planted a sapling and inspected Larsen & Toubro's Armed Systems Complex.
According to Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, development projects worth more than ₹18,000 crore were inaugurated and launched in the state in the presence of the Prime Minister, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Union Minister C.R. Patil.
India resilient amid global challenges: PM Modi
Speaking at the rally, Modi said the world continues to face unprecedented challenges, including the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflicts and energy-related disruptions.
"The world is going through a phase of unprecedented challenges... First, there was the massive crisis caused by COVID-19; then wars broke out in various places, and a severe energy crisis has thrown the entire world into disarray," he said.
Despite these headwinds, Modi said India had successfully navigated global uncertainties through the collective efforts of its citizens.
"It gives me great satisfaction that, through the collective efforts of 140 crore Indians, the country is facing every such crisis with strength," he said.
Targets Congress over governance
The Prime Minister also launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, alleging that it had pursued politics centred on instability and uncertainty.
"There is immense resentment among the people of Karnataka regarding the Congress government," Modi said, adding that India today is driven by optimism, aspirations and the determination of its people.
Referring to recent local body elections in states such as Himachal Pradesh and Haryana, Modi claimed voters had rejected Congress governments and their style of governance.
"The Congress's politics of seeking opportunities amidst chaos will not work," he said.
