One more dead body was recovered in Uttarkashi on Monday, August 11, as rescue operations at the disaster-hit site in Uttarakhand remain hampered due to
heavy rains since the morning. On a more positive note, the state authorities said the promised compensation of ₹5 lakh will be distributed today.
Officials said one more body was found and 42 are still missing following the flash floods in Dharali and Harsil (on August 5), as per PTI.
The authorities could establish contact with five of the 29 missing Nepali labourers, thanks to the restoration of the mobile network here.
A mudslide on August 5 washed away the entire village of Dharali. It also damaged an army camp in Harsil. After nearly a week, hopes of finding survivors are ebbing.
"As per the information received so far, 43 people were reported missing in the disaster, out of which the body of Akash Panwar, a youth from Dharali village, has been recovered," Commissioner of Garhwal Vinay Shankar told reporters, as per PTI.
However, he did not specify the death toll. Earlier, four people were said to be dead, as per the district administration. Later, two more bodies were found.
A total of 1,278 people have been evacuated during the rescue operation by helicopters. "All the outsiders and needy local people stranded in the affected area have been evacuated," Shankar informed.
Compensation amount today
The state authorities had announced financial assistance to all the people affected by the disaster.
"The CM had immediately announced ₹5 lakh each for the deceased, who are missing and whose whereabouts have been traced. Today (August 11), the amount will be distributed to all affected," Gangotri MLA Suresh Chauhan told ANI.
Uttarkashi DM Prashant Arya was more specific: “Today, whatever distribution you see is for those whose houses were damaged. There are 99 such families, and we are giving them ₹5 lakh in compensation, as announced by the CM through the MLA. If any family is left out, they can contact us and register their names,” as per ANI.
