A massive flash flood in the Khir Ganga river in Uttarkashi has washed away many houses in Dharali village on Tuesday, August 5. According to District Magistrate Prashant Arya, at least four fatalities have been confirmed so far.
Rescue efforts are underway, with an Army team from Harsil deployed to assist in relief operations.
Water carrying silt cascaded into the village with many people feared to be trapped. Disaster teams have rushed to the spot for rescue operations.
A local resident, Rajesh Panwar, told PTI that 10-12 people could be buried under the debris following the disaster. He also estimated that around 20 to 25 hotels and homestays might have been swept away in the incident.
The incident happened after a cloud
burst in Uttarakhand, Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya said, as per news agency ANI.
"In Uttarkashi, due to the rising water level of Kheer Gadh in the Harsil area, reports of damage in Dharali have prompted police, SDRF, army, and other disaster response teams to engage in relief and rescue operations at the site," Uttarkashi Police said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
Teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Uttarakhand SDRF are rushing to the spot to initiate the rescue operation.
The Army has also been called in.
"The news of heavy damage caused by a cloudburst in the Dharali (Uttarkashi) region is extremely sad and distressing. SDRF, NDRF, district administration, and other related teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations on a war footing," Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on X.
"In this regard, I am in constant contact with senior officials, and the situation is being closely monitored. I pray to God for everyone's safety," he added.
