The IMD further predicted isolated to scattered rainfall for the Western Himalayan Region, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, the Lakshadweep and Islands for subsequent three days.
Meanwhile, isolated thunderstorms and lightning are also likely to prevail over Andaman & Nicobar Islands on December 26 and 27.
Orange alert for fog in UP, Bihar
The IMD issued an orange alert for dense fog across Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh, alongside an orange alert for persistent cold day conditions in Bihar. Additionally, yellow alerts for fog are in effect for Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and the northeastern states.
The IMD predicted dense to very dense fog during night and morning hours across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh until December 29. Similar conditions are expected in Uttarakhand until December 28 and Madhya Pradesh through December 25.
Additionally, dense fog during night and morning hours is likely at some pockets of Bihar till December 25 (and again between December 26 and 28), in isolated pockets of Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh and Odisha till December 28. Similar conditions are expected in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Jharkhand till December 25 and northeast India till December 26.
Isolated pockets of Bihar are also under a cold day alert from December 24 to 28.
Dense fog envelops Delhi
Dense fog has blanketed Delhi, causing extremely poor visibility, disrupting flights and road traffic, and worsening the already severe air quality. On Wednesday, the IMD predicted mainly clear sky for Delhi, with shallow fog at many places and moderate fog at isolated places during morning hours.
According to the data by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the overall AQI stood at 336 at 9 am, falling in the 'very poor' category.
