In its latest bulletin, the IMD also predicted squally weather with wind speeds of 35 kmph to 45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph along and off the Kerala coasts and adjoining sea areas, over Lakshadweep, Maldives, Cape Comorin areas, and over the Gulf of Mannar.
Further withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon
This year, the Southwest Monsoon is projected to end and the Northeast Monsoon to begin at the same time. As per the bulletin issued today, conditions are favourable for the full exit of the Southwest Monsoon. Simultaneously, the Northeast Monsoon rainfall activity is expected to begin over the southeast peninsular region during the same period.
“Conditions are favourable for further withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from the remaining parts of the country during the next 24 hours. Simultaneously with the setting in of easterly & northeasterly winds over southern peninsular India and south & adjoining central Bay of Bengal, the Northeast Monsoon rainfall activity is likely to commence over south east peninsular region during the same period,” the IMD said.
Light to moderate rain in Mumbai
Light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by possible thunderstorms, is expected in Mumbai on October 16, according to the IMD. The weather agency officially announced the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from Mumbai on October 10, 2025, marking its earliest exit since 2018.
Morning haze returns in Delhi.
According to IMD, Delhi will see clear skies this week. For the next few days, mild morning mist or haze is expected to persist, with temperatures ranging between 16°C and 33°C. Maximum temperatures in the national capital are expected to be around 31-33°C and minimum temperatures between 16-18°C. On Thursday morning, Delhi’s AQI remained in the ‘poor’ range at 236 at 10:00 am, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Rainfall over South India
Based on the India Meteorological Department forecast, South Peninsular India will experience widespread rain and thunderstorms between October 16 and 21. In particular, very heavy rainfall is predicted for Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Mahe on October 16 and 17, with these regions also seeing isolated heavy rain on other days within this period.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema will also get isolated heavy rainfall on October 16 and 17, while coastal and south interior Karnataka should expect this on October 16. The entire region is also set to experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds, reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, over the next five days.
