What is the story about?
A social media hashtag linked to a two-day Uttar Pradesh Police conference briefly topped the global trend on X Saturday evening, drawing over 1.7 billion impressions, according to state officials.
The hashtag - #UP_Police_Manthan - was used in connection with a conference of senior police officers chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Police units across the state shared photographs, short videos, and updates from the event through their official social media handles, officials said.
The campaign was carried out under directions from Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna, per PTI reports.
According to a statement issued late Sunday, the hashtag reached the top of X’s global trending list at around 5.30 pm on December 28 and remained there for more than two hours before gradually dropping down the rankings.
No paid promotion was mentioned in the official note.
UP Police hashtag trends on X: here's what happened
The conference, titled Police Manthan, brought together senior officers from across Uttar Pradesh for discussions on internal coordination, law enforcement priorities and administrative matters. The event was held over two days and included closed-door sessions as well as formal presentations.
During the conference, police units were instructed to post verified updates related to the event. These posts were then amplified across district and unit-level accounts, creating a large volume of simultaneous activity tied to the same hashtag.
That volume, officials said, pushed the tag into global trend territory.
How UP police units shared content across the state
Social media analysts note that trending on X is influenced not only by total post count but also by the speed at which content appears within a short time window.
In this case, hundreds of official accounts posted around the same topic within a narrow time frame. The result was a spike that the platform’s algorithm registered as global-level activity.
The state government said the trend reflected ‘public engagement’ with policing and governance initiatives. No independent verification of impression figures has been released so far.
By late evening, the hashtag had fallen off the global top list. The conference concluded the same day.
