What is the story about?
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Ladakh was set on fire on Wednesday, September 24, by protestors demanding statehood.
The protestors were demanding the inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The protests turned violent as clashes broke out between the police and the demonstrators. The violence left at least four people dead, while 30 others were injured, news agency PTI reported citing officials.
The ongoing protests are led by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) which turned violent as the protestors alleged that the Centre did not acknowledge their demands, as per News18.
The LAB group had called for protests on September 24 after two of its members, who were on a 35-day hunger strike which started on September 10, fell ill and were taken to hospital on the evening of Tuesday, September 23.
About 15 people had went on the hunger strike, as per News18.
Activist Sonam Wangchuk also participated in the ongoing protests in the region.
The police fired teargas shells and resorted to baton charge to control the crowd. Stone pelting by the youth was also reported.
Ladakh is presently a Union Territory since August 5, 2019 when the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two different regions after the abrogation of Article 370.
The two union territories - Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh - were administered by the Centre for sometime. Elections were held in J&K in 2024 when Omar Abdullah became the Chief Minister.
