What is the story about?
Visitors to the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, also known as the Prime Ministers’ Museum, in Delhi can now interact with an AI-powered 3D avatar of Mahatma Gandhi from May 20.
The installation has been introduced through an AI-powered interactive HoloBox that projects a life-size digital avatar of Gandhi and allows visitors to engage in real-time voice conversations.
Museum officials described the avatar as “hyper-realistic” and said the initiative is aimed at using technology to improve visitor engagement and accessibility.
The Gandhi HoloBox is the third such AI-based installation at the museum. Earlier, the museum launched similar interactive avatars of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and former President APJ Abdul Kalam.
Officials said a HoloBox featuring former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is also expected to be launched soon.
AI-Powered Experience
According to officials, the HoloBox combines holographic display technology with generative AI and motion-tracking systems to create interactive digital projections capable of responding to visitor queries in real time.
A senior official at the museum said the initiative is part of a broader push to strengthen the use of technology for “enhanced interaction and visitor satisfaction”.
“This will enable the visitors to engage in life-like interactive conversation with Mahatma Gandhi,” the official said.
Officials added that the project is designed to merge historical storytelling with modern digital technology to create a more immersive museum experience.
More Avatars Planned
Ashwani Lohani, Director of the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library (PMML), had earlier said the institution plans to expand the use of artificial intelligence across the museum campus.
“We are working to bring extensive use of AI at the museum to enhance the experience of visitors. So, we started with a life-size AI-powered Holobox of Sardar Patel, and then of former president APJ Abdul Kalam. Soon, we will bring similar avatars of Gandhiji and Atalji,” Lohani told PTI in a video interview in April.
At the time, he had said the Gandhi and Vajpayee projects were in the final stage and expected to be launched by the end of May.
Lohani also said the museum is exploring additional AI-based accessibility tools for visitors, including technology designed to assist visually impaired people through audio-guided descriptions.
Museum’s Tech Push
The Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya has increasingly focused on technology-driven exhibits in recent years. Apart from the AI HoloBoxes, the museum also offers immersive installations, including a simulated helicopter ride over major infrastructure projects such as the Atal Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh and the Chenab Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir.
Another gallery themed around national security showcases military operations and defence capabilities through interactive displays.
Visitors can also use a digital photo installation that generates images with virtual representations of India’s prime ministers, from Jawaharlal Nehru to Narendra Modi.
About The Museum
The Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya was inaugurated in 2022 and is located at the Teen Murti complex in Delhi. The institution was earlier known as the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML). In 2023, it was renamed the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library (PMML).
The museum includes the historic Teen Murti Bhawan, which once served as the residence of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, along with a newly constructed modern museum complex. The site preserves archival material and documents related to India’s prime ministers and political history.
According to Lohani, more than 6.4 lakh people visited the museum during the financial year 2025-26, reflecting rising public interest in the institution and its technology-led exhibits.
