What is the story about?
The Padma Awards, among India's highest civilian honours, are announced every year on the eve of Republic Day, January 25, recognising individuals for exceptional and distinguished service across a wide range of fields.
The honours are conferred in three categories: Padma Vibhushan for exceptional and distinguished service; Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a higher order; and Padma Shri for distinguished service in various disciplines.

Who confers the Padma Awards?
The names of the Padma Awards winners are announced every year on the eve of Republic Day. The honours recognise achievements across all fields involving public service.
The Padma awards are conferred by the President of India, usually during a ceremonial function held in March or April. The recipients are selected based on recommendations made by the Padma Awards Committee, which is constituted annually by the Prime Minister.
When were the Padma Awards first instituted?
Along with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, the Padma awards were instituted in 1954.
Initially, the awards were grouped under a single category called Padma Vibhushan, with three classes — Pahela Varg, Dusra Varg and Tisra Varg. These classifications were later renamed Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri through a Presidential Notification in 1955.
The Padma awards have been conferred every year since their inception, except during the periods 1978–79 and 1993–97.

The Padma awards do not carry any cash prize. Recipients receive:
The names of the awardees are published in the Gazette of India on the day of the presentation ceremony. Importantly, the Padma awards do not confer a title and cannot be used as a prefix or suffix to an individual’s name.
