What is the story about?
A Rajdhani Express train plying from DN Sairang to New Delhi hit a herd of elephants in Assam, which resulted in the derailment of the locomotive as well as five coaches of the train. A few of the elephants were also killed due to the incident, as per reports.
The incident occurred at 2.17 am in the Jamunamukh-Kampur section, which falls under the Lumding division of the North Frontier Railway.
None of the passengers suffered injuries or casualties, news agency ANI reported, citing Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the chief public relations officer of the Northeast Frontier Railway. Accident relief trains with officials from the divisional headquarters were at the site.
Railway authorities said train services in the section were disrupted following the incident and the trains had been diverted via the UP line, while restoration work was underway.
Sharma said the loco pilot applied emergency brakes and stopped the train. The restoration work has been completed, he added.
Of the herd of elephants, eight were killed and one was injured, Times of India reported, citing a forest official.
