The Pamban Bridge is the first vertical lift bridge in India. The 2.5-kilometre bridge allows trains to cross the sea between mainland India and Rameswaram island in less than 5 minutes.
The bridge was built in collaboration with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) at a cost of ₹535 crore.
The bridge replaced the Colonial-era bridge, which was built in 1914. It was closed in 2022 due to corrosion problems.
