What is the story about?
Train services were disrupted and passengers were left stranded after the new Pamban bridge in Tamil Nadu's Rameswaram developed a technical glitch. The work is underway to restore normal services.
At
least four trains, including Train No. 16104 Rameswaram — Tambaram Express, Train no. 16527 Rameswaram — Chennai Egmore Express, Train no. 56716 Rameswaram — Madurai passenger, and Train No. 56713 Madurai —Rameswaram Passenger, were stopped at Akka Math, news agency ANI reported.
The Pamban Bridge is the first vertical lift bridge in India. The 2.5-kilometre bridge allows trains to cross the sea between mainland India and Rameswaram island in less than 5 minutes.
The bridge was built in collaboration
with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) at a cost of ₹535 crore.
The bridge replaced the Colonial-era bridge, which was built in 1914. It was closed in 2022 due to corrosion problems.
