What is the story about?
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has written to the cybercrime department demanding the immediate shutdown of application that offer unauthorized bike tax services such as Ola, Uber and Rapido.
Sarnaik has also called for the filing of FIRs against the respective company owners.
The Maharashtra cyber cell told CNBC-TV18 that it is the responsibility of the app aggregators and the platforms to remove the 'bike taxi' option. "How they do that without disabling the entire app is not our problem. Bike tax is illegal and that needs to be removed," the Maharashtra cyber cell said.
The Maharashtra DGIPR in a post on X clarified that the claim circulating on social media that 'all' services of Ola, Uber and Rapido have been completely shutdown in Maharashtra is misleading. Clarifying further to CNBC-TV18, Maharashtra DGIPR said, "Our fact check is limited to the fact that Ola, Uber services will continue in the state. How will the bike feature be disabled, that is not our lookout. Our fact check is limited to clarifying and assuring people that the service will continue."
To sum it up, bike taxis are illegal in Maharashtra and the state has called for the apps that provide this service to be removed.
