What is the story about?
The ruling Mahayuti alliance will secure the mayor's post in the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan said amid heightened political churn following support extended by five Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporators to the BJP–Shiv Sena combine.
Chavan also asserted that the Mahayuti will form civic administrations and have its mayors in the Ulhasnagar and Thane municipal corporations as well.
"The BJP–Shiv Sena alliance has received a clear public mandate in all three civic bodies. Accordingly, the mayoral posts will be held by Mahayuti candidates," Chavan said.
He added that a final call on the mayoral appointments will be taken after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis returns from Davos, following a joint meeting in Mumbai with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Chavan said he had already held detailed discussions with Shinde on the mayoral strategy last week.
MNS support reshapes KDMC numbers
The mayoral race in Kalyan-Dombivli saw a fresh political twist on January 21 after five corporators from the Raj Thackeray-led MNS extended support to the Shiv Sena, which is part of the Mahayuti. The move is being seen as a setback for Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT), especially after the MNS and Sena (UBT) had jointly contested the January 15 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
In the 122-member KDMC, the Shiv Sena has emerged as the single largest party with 53 seats, followed closely by ally BJP with 50 seats. With MNS backing, the Mahayuti's strength rises to 108 members. Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (SP) have secured 11, two and one seats, respectively.
Comfortable majorities in Thane, Ulhasnagar
In the 131-member Thane Municipal Corporation, the Shiv Sena won 75 seats, while the BJP secured 28, taking the alliance well past the majority mark of 66.
In Ulhasnagar, which has 78 corporators, the BJP and Shiv Sena contested independently but emerged with 37 and 36 seats, respectively. The Shiv Sena later consolidated its position by securing the support of two corporators from Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA).
Chavan also asserted that the Mahayuti will form civic administrations and have its mayors in the Ulhasnagar and Thane municipal corporations as well.
