Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust chief Champat Rai and Anil Mishra, a trustee of the trust, resigned on Friday amid the ongoing investigation into the suspected theft of donations at the Ram Mandir.
This comes one day after eight individuals were detained in relation to the case, including counting employees, the head of the counting operation, a retired banker who oversaw the procedure, and Ramashankar Yadav, also known as Tinnu, the driver and close associate of Ram Mandir Trust General Secretary Champat Rai.
On June 25, a formal complaint was filed over the purported embezzlement of funds gathered at the Ayodhya Ram Temple. Following instructions from the Uttar Pradesh government, the complaint has been filed under a number of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provisions, including Sections 306, 316(5), 317(4), 317(5), 61, and 3(5).

In response to a request from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir Trust, the state government established a three-person Special Investigation Team (SIT) on June 14 to look into the alleged irregularities in contribution monies. Based on the preliminary findings of the SIT, the FIR was filed.
After allegations surfaced that some of the temple's gift collections were missing, the purported anomalies came under investigation. The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust requested a government investigation into the issue amid mounting controversy.
A three-person Special Investigation Team (SIT) was established by the Uttar Pradesh government on June 14 to look into the claims. Two days after the panel filed its preliminary report on June 23, a formal complaint was filed against eight individuals.
