What is the story about?
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan filed his nomination as the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate from the Dharmadam Assembly constituency in Kannur district, becoming the first major party leader to do so for the upcoming state polls.
Vijayan submitted his papers before Returning Officer Sachin Krishna at the Sub-Registrar Office in Thalassery around 11 am on Thursday (March 19), accompanied by senior CPI(M) leaders including EP Jayarajan, AN Shamseer, KK Rajesh and P Sasi.
The nomination coincided with the 28th death anniversary of EMS Namboodiripad, Kerala's first chief minister and a towering communist leader.
While the CPI(M) had initially planned a large roadshow from Vijayan's hometown Pinarayi to Thalassery, the chief minister skipped the event and arrived directly at the office. He spent about 15 minutes completing the formalities before leaving for Malappuram to attend party events marking Namboodiripad's death anniversary.
This marks the third time Vijayan has filed nomination from Dharmadam, having won the seat in both 2016 and 2021. He has also previously represented Kuthuparamba (three terms) and Thaliparamba (one term) in the state assembly.
In his affidavit, the two-time chief minister declared total assets worth ₹1.01 crore, down from ₹1.18 crore reported ahead of the 2021 elections. His movable assets are valued at over ₹45 lakh, including bank deposits and shares in companies such as Malayalam Communications Limited (which owns Kairali TV) and Kannur International Airport Limited.
Vijayan reported immovable assets worth over ₹56 lakh, comprising a residential property and 78 cents of agricultural land. He has declared no ownership of gold or vehicles.
His wife, Kamala Vijayan, has movable assets worth ₹60 lakh, including 80 grams of gold, and immovable assets valued at ₹36 lakh. The affidavit states that the couple has no liabilities.
Vijayan has disclosed six pending cases against him, including one under the Prevention of Corruption Act related to the SNC-Lavalin case, and another under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate linked to Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board's masala bond issue.
