A massive flash flood in the Khir Ganga river in Uttarkashi washed away many houses in Tharali village on Tuesday, August 5. The flash flood was triggered by a cloud burst.
Water carrying silt cascaded
into the village and many people are feared to be trapped. There has been no official word on casualties.
Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya said a major cloud burst has occurred in Dharali near Harsil.
Teams of NDRF and SDRF are rushing to the spot to initiate the rescue operation. The Army has also been called in. Authorities have asked people to move to a safer place.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh posted on X, “The news of heavy damage caused by a cloudburst in the Dharali (Uttarkashi) region
is extremely sad and distressing. SDRF, NDRF, district administration, and other related teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations on a war footing. In this regard, I am in constant contact with senior officials, and the situation is being closely monitored. I pray to God for everyone’s safety.”
