What is the story about?
Indian Railways plans to double the originating capacity of trains in major cities within five years, with the full target set for 2030.
The plan responds to sustained growth in travel demand. The current infrastructure will be expanded to meet future requirements.
The plan includes four types of work:
Capacity planning will also consider nearby stations so that traffic is balanced. For Pune, the plan includes Hadapsar, Khadki, and Alandi in addition to more platforms and stabling lines at Pune station.
The exercise covers suburban and non-suburban traffic. Zones will prepare a comprehensive plan for 48 cities and submit it to the Planning Directorate. The plan will list works that are proposed, planned, or already sanctioned to double originating capacity in a time-bound manner.
Although the final target year is 2030, capacity increases will be phased in over the next five years. This will allow benefits to accrue progressively.
Actions will be grouped as immediate, short-term, and long-term. Each zonal railway will also plan to increase sectional capacity and address operational constraints in stations and yards.
