What is the story about?
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a total of 91 takedown notices to X Corp (formerly Twitter) and flagged nearly 1,100 URLs over the past two years, according to an Indian Express report published on Tuesday. The action followed the launch of the Sahayog Portal in March 2024.
As per the report, more than half of the flagged URLs - 566 in total - were linked to the offence of “disturbing public order”. This was followed by 124 URLs accused of targeting public and political figures.
The data further shows that 58 takedown notices were issued to X in 2024 alone. Of these, 24 cited violations related to public tranquillity and the promotion of enmity.
Three other notices issued in 2024 flagged content deemed a threat to national integrity and sovereignty. The figures are based on a compilation of notices submitted before the Delhi High Court between March 20, 2024, and November 7, 2025, the report said.
What the data reveals further
Of the 91 takedown notices issued over the 20 months for alleged criminal activity, 15 were related to issues such as the promotion of betting applications, impersonation of official handles with the potential to cause financial fraud, and the circulation of child sexual abuse material.
A single notice issued on May 13, 2024, flagged 115 URLs for an allegedly doctored video that was said to be spreading misinformation with the intent to influence ongoing electoral processes.
During the Lok Sabha elections between April and May 2024, a total of 761 URLs were flagged in takedown notices sent to X. Of these, nine notices covering 198 URLs cited violations of provisions under the Representation of the People Act.
