What is the story about?
Rainfall, snowfall and dense fog conditions are expected to continue across large parts of north and central India as two Western Disturbances affect the region in quick succession, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Light to moderate rainfall and snowfall is likely over the Western Himalayan region between January 30 and February 3, while adjoining plains of northwest and central India may witness isolated to scattered rainfall during the same period, the IMD said in its weather bulletin.
A fresh Western Disturbance is currently seen as a cyclonic circulation over northeast Iran at the middle tropospheric level, while another system is likely to impact northwest India from February 2, it added.
Heavy rain and snowfall in hill states
Rain and snowfall with thunderstorms and strong winds are expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad from January 30 to February 1.
The same condition is expected over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh between February 1 and 2, as per IMD.
Due to heavy snowfall and rainfall, travel has been disrupted across the hilly areas as roads get blocked and flight operations see delays and cancellations.
Dense fog and cold wave conditions continue
The IMD reported dense to very dense fog in isolated pockets of Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh and west Uttar Pradesh on January 29.
Visibility dropped below 50 metres at several locations, including Pantnagar, Agra IAF and Sarsawa IAF.
Dense fog conditions are likely to persist in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh till January 31, while cold wave conditions may affect parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on January 30 and 31, IMD said.
Ground frost conditions were observed over Uttarakhand and are expected to continue on January 30.
Delhi NCR to see rains, thunderstorms
For Delhi NCR, the IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies with shallow to moderate fog on January 30.
The maximum temperature is expected to range between 18-20 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may hover between 9-11 degrees Celsius.
The national capital may witness very light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph on January 31. Dense fog is also likely during morning hours, the IMD said.
On February 1, one or two spells of light rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected during both morning and afternoon hours. Maximum temperatures may remain below normal, while minimum temperatures are likely to rise appreciably.
