What is the story about?
The Union Government has informed the Lok Sabha that the Copyright Act, 1957, is currently under review to assess whether it adequately addresses legal and policy challenges posed by generative artificial intelligence.
In a written reply to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada stated that the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) constituted an eight-member expert committee on April 28, 2025 to examine the impact of generative AI on copyright law.
The committee has been tasked with analysing issues arising from the use of copyrighted works in AI systems, evaluating the sufficiency of existing legal provisions, and recommending changes where required.
According to the government, Part I of the committee’s working paper has already been published and focuses on the use of copyrighted material for training AI models, with stakeholder consultations currently underway.
Part II, which is still under consideration, is expected to deal with unresolved questions relating to authorship, ownership, and copyrightability of AI-generated content.
The government clarified that the review process is ongoing and any future legal or policy action will be based on the committee’s final recommendations.
