What is the story about?
A food manufacturing unit in Hapur, Meerut, has been sealed after officials found it was making tomato sauce in unsafe conditions.
The raid was carried out in the Pannapuri area by the food safety department, reported The Times of India. What they discovered raised serious concerns about hygiene and food safety.
According to officials, the unit was not using fresh ingredients. Instead, it was reportedly making sauce with vegetable pulp, acid and banned synthetic colours.
Nearly 200 litres of adulterated sauce were seized, the report added. The ketchup was reportedly being supplied to local eateries and street vendors at a very low price of ₹20 per litre.
Food Commissioner Sunil Kumar confirmed the findings and said the situation was worrying. “Samples have been sent for laboratory testing. The product appeared unsafe for consumption,” Kumar was quoted as saying.
Officials also noted the presence of rotten material and chemical substances at the unit, the report added.
Further action will depend on the laboratory results. Kumar added, “If the samples are found unsafe for consumption, a case will be filed against the operator.”
The incident has raised concerns about what goes into food sold at smaller eateries. Since the sauce was reportedly supplied to local vendors, many people could have unknowingly consumed it. Authorities have now urged residents to be cautious.
