Traffic on the Yamuna Expressway remained severely disrupted on Tuesday (December 16) after a major multi-vehicle collision in Mathura triggered a three-kilometre-long jam near Agra’s Khandauli toll plaza, forcing authorities to halt vehicle movement and divert traffic.
The Agra–Noida carriageway of the Yamuna Expressway was completely closed following the accident, leading to long queues of vehicles at the Khandauli toll plaza, according to news agency ANI.

Thousands of vehicles were stranded, and passengers faced hours of delay, with elderly people, women and children among the worst affected.
As a precaution, toll operations were suspended, and traffic was diverted via alternate routes while police and district officials worked to restore normal movement, as per Dainik Jagran.
Fog-triggered collision sparks massive fire
The pile-up occurred in the early hours of Tuesday (December 16) under Baldev police station limits in Mathura district. At least seven buses and three smaller vehicles collided around 4:30 am amid dense fog on the Agra-to-Noida stretch of the expressway, resulting in a large fire, as per news agency PTI.
“The vehicles collided due to low visibility on the Agra-to-Noida side of the Yamuna Expressway. Some vehicles also caught fire. All injured have been sent to the hospital,” Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said.
Visuals from the site showed charred remains of buses, with cranes deployed to clear the wreckage from the roadway.
Death toll rises to 13, dozens injured
As per police officials quoted by PTI, 13 people died after being trapped in the fire, while 35 others sustained injuries. “All 13 died of burns,” Baldev SHO Ranjana Sachan said.
Of the injured, several were admitted to the district hospital, community health centres, private hospitals in Baldev, and SN Medical College in Agra. “None of the injured are in critical condition,” Mathura Police said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
CM announces ex gratia, diversions continue
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences and announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 to the injured.
Diversions remained in place as authorities continued clearance operations and traffic management.
