“With this new airport, farmers in Maharashtra will be connected to the markets of the Middle East and Europe. This will attract investment and new businesses to the area. I congratulate the people of Maharashtra on the inauguration of this airport,” he added.
He said, “Now Mumbai has anew airport (NMIA), which will be Asia’s largest connectivity hub. Today, the city also has a fully underground metro to facilitate easy travel across Mumbai. Launching an underground metro with such careful construction in a city like Mumbai is a big achievement.”
He added thatthe airport's lotus-shaped construction represents our heritage and culture. It will increase trade with other countries and improve access to the global market.
Comparing the figures to 2014, when there were only 74 airports, he noted that now there are more than 160 airports in India.
A landmark Greenfield project built at a cost of around ₹ 19,650 crore, the airport spans 1,160 hectares and is expected to improve India's aviation capacity. It's also likely to ease the heavy traffic burden on the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
