What is the story about?
A review of affidavits uploaded by the Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) showed that several high-profile candidates contesting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in 2026 have reported a substantial increase in their declared assets over the past nine years.
Financial disclosures filed with nomination papers indicate steep asset growth among leaders from major political parties, compared with their declarations during the civic elections 2017, as per news agency PTI.
Former mayor and Shiv Sena leaders
Former Mumbai mayor and Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Kishori Pednekar, contesting from Lower Parel (ward 199), has declared total assets of ₹5.26 crore, marking a 226% rise from ₹1.61 crore in 2017.
Her affidavit lists immovable assets worth ₹4.69 crore and movable assets of ₹57 lakh. Pednekar served as mayor between 2019 and 2022.
Samadhan Sarvankar of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), seeking a second term, has declared assets amounting to ₹46.59 crore, a sharp increase of nearly 394% from ₹9.43 crore in 2017, as per PTI.
His affidavit shows immovable assets of ₹40.59 crore, with his profession listed as business.
Family-linked candidates and repeat contestants
Former MLA Yamini Jadhav, contesting from Mazagaon (ward 209), has declared assets worth ₹14.57 crore, including immovable properties of ₹11.28 crore.
During the Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024, she had reported assets of
₹10.10 crore along with loans of ₹52 lakh, as per PTI.
Geeta Gawali, daughter of former legislator Arun Gawali and contesting from Byculla-Agripada (ward 212), has declared assets of ₹7.26 crore, compared with ₹3.38 crore during the Assembly polls in 2019. Her sister Yogita Gawali, contesting from ward 207 for the first time, has reported assets of ₹3.65 crore.
BJP and Congress candidates
Former BJP corporator Neil Somaiya, son of party leader Kirit Somaiya, has declared assets of ₹9.89 crore, up from ₹1.99 crore in 2017 — a rise of nearly 400%.
Another BJP leader, Prabhakar Shinde, has reported assets of ₹17.63 crore, compared to ₹11.9 crore earlier, as per PTI.
Tejasvini Ghosalkar, who recently joined the BJP after leaving Shiv Sena (UBT), has declared assets of ₹5.15 crore, up from ₹25.82 lakh in 2017.
Congress candidate Sheetal Mhatre from Dahisar (ward 1) has reported assets of ₹4.27 crore, compared with ₹17.29 lakh in the last civic polls, as per PTI.
Withdrawn and rejected nominations
The SEC has also uploaded affidavits of candidates who withdrew or whose nominations were rejected. This includes former deputy mayor Babubhai Bhavanji, who declared assets of
₹31.44 crore, up from ₹8.23 lakh in 2017.
The last date for filing nominations was December 30. The civic polls, scheduled for January 15, will see around 1,700 candidates vying for 227 wards across Mumbai.
