The ruling Mahayuti alliance, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena, and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), registered a sweeping victory
in the Maharashtra local body elections, winning 207 of the 288 vacant posts of municipal council presidents. The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was restricted to just 44 posts.
Elections to 246 municipal councils and 42 town (nagar) panchayats were conducted in two phases on December 2 and December 20.
Of the 288 posts of municipal council presidents that were contested, the BJP emerged as the single largest winner, securing 117 posts. Its allies also performed strongly, with the Shiv Sena winning 53 posts and the NCP clinching 37.

In contrast, the Opposition put up a weak showing. The Congress managed to win 28 posts, while the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) secured nine, and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) won seven.
The results are being seen as a major endorsement of the Mahayuti alliance at the grassroots level and a reaffirmation of public support for the BJP-led coalition in Maharashtra.
Counting of votes for Maharashtra’s local body elections began at 10 am on Sunday (21 December). The final results were released by the State Election Commission (SEC) on Sunday night, after trends earlier in the evening had already indicated a decisive lead for the Mahayuti.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed gratitude to the people of the state for giving an overwhelming mandate to the BJP and the Mahayuti alliance in the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Fadnavis said the victory belonged to the party’s karyakartas, whose “hard work, commitment, and perseverance” made the success possible. He said, "The people of Maharashtra have once again reaffirmed their unwavering faith in the visionary leadership of Hon PM Narendra Modi Ji, along with the guidance of BJP National President and Hon Union Minister J. P. Nadda ji and BJP National Working President Nitin Nabin ji, paving the way for the BJP’s historic victory."
