What is the story about?
West Bengal is set to get five new districts as part of the state government’s plan to restructure administrative boundaries and improve governance. Kolkata will be an independent district along with Sundarbans, Arambagh, Jangipur and Basirhat.
The announcement was made by Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta as he presented the first full Budget for FY 2026-27 in the Assembly by the newly elected BJP government.
The move is expected to bring administrative offices closer to residents and improve access to government schemes and essential services.
Smaller districts are often seen as a way to ensure faster decision-making, better monitoring of development projects and more focused governance.
