What is the story about?
A 70-foot-long steel bridge, weighing over 10 tonnes, was stolen overnight in Korba, Chhattisgarh. The bridge, built over 40 years ago across the Hasdeo Left Canal in the Dhodhipara area, served as a pedestrian pathway for local residents.
Investigators reported that 15 individuals were involved in the theft. They allegedly cut and stole the structure to sell it as scrap.
According to a report in PTI, five of the suspects have already been apprehended. All five - identified as Lochan Kevat (20), Jaysingh Rajput (23), Moti Prajapati (27), Sumit Sahu (19), and Keshavpuri Goswami alias ‘Picture’ (22) - are residents of the CSEB police chowki area in Korba.
Ten others remain at large, including the alleged kingpins Mukesh Sahu and Aslam Khan.
Earlier on Sunday (January 18), residents of the Dhodhipara area found that a steel bridge over the Hasdeo Left Canal had gone missing. Following the discovery, local corporator Laxman Shrivas filed a formal complaint at the CSEB police chowki, according to Korba Additional Superintendent of Police Lakhan Patle.
In a conversation with PTI over the phone, corporator Shrivas stated the 70-foot-long and five-foot-wide bridge was built nearly four decades ago and weighed over 10 tonnes. Since the theft of the steel bridge, residents have been forced to use a nearby concrete bridge to cross the canal.
As per the preliminary inquiry, the suspect used gas cutters to cut the structure's iron railings. After receiving a written complaint, a special police team was formed to investigate the situation.
Police have seized a vehicle used for transportation and recovered approximately 7 tonnes of stolen steel that had been hidden in the canal.
Earlier in 2022, a 60-foot-long, 500-tonne iron bridge was stolen from a village in the Rohtas district of Bihar. The bridge, built around 45 years ago, was stolen by thieves who posed as government officials.
Eight people, including an official of the Bihar Water Resources Department, were later arrested in this matter.
