Mumbai Declares Holiday Due to Heavy Rains

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday (August 19) declared a holiday for all the government officers, barring the emergency services. This comes after Mumbai, its suburbs and other neighbouring districts were

being battered by heavy rains since last week. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red for the Konkan region, including Mumbai.

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani told CNBC-TV18, " We have declared a holiday for all the government officers, barring the emergency services. We appeal all private offices to either declare a holiday or work from home for their employees. "

He said Mithi river's water level is nearing the danger mark. The danger mark is 4 metres and water has reached upto 3.10 metres. The municipal

corporation has started evacuating the nearby slum areas.

The Mumbai Police also advised people to avoid travel. Deven Bharti, Commissioner of Police of Greater Mumbai, also urged private firms to allow work from home in view of the incessant downpour.

"Good Morning Mumbai. Hope you are adhering to the safety guidelines in wake of the heavy showers expected today. Please take care, step out only if necessary, prevent going near the shore during high tide and don’t forget, you will find us around the corner for help, in case of any emergency.

Requesting the private sector to enable work from home as much as possible," it posted on X.
